"SMALL TOWN STORIES"

NOTE: Here's some information about our Cable Access TV Program which aired from January 16,2004 until December 2004.  It aired on TimeWarner Cable Channel 21, Adelphia Cable Channel 25 and Concord/Cabarrus Cable Channel 7.

Concept:  To go "on location" and find out what makes us similar by interviewing folks and listening to their stories about their remembrances of where they grew up and the people they knew

LENGTH OF PROGRAM: 1/2 hour

WHEN IT AIRED: Every 3rd Friday at 8:30pm (once a month) beginning January 16, 2004 on TimeWarner Cable TV Access 21 and simulcast on Adelphia Cable Channel 25 in Iredell County. In Cabarrus County, “Small Town Stories” will air every Friday at 9:30PM, but the episodes will rotate. Additional airtimes will be given at the discretion of the Program Director (ROS [run of stations]) in Cabarrus as time slots are open.

WHERE IT AIRED: Charlotte TimeWarner Cable Channel 21, Adelphia Cable Channel 25 and in Cabarrus, TimeWarner Cable Channel 7.

WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF VIEWERSHIP: Over 100,000 cable subscribers. There is the potential to reach nearly 200,000 cable subscribers in the tri-county area.

EXPERIENCE OF PRODUCER (Della Freedman):

  Had a program called "Works In Progress" on Cable Access from 1989-1991 and won two (2) Cable Access awards for Best Educational Program and for Best Individual Show. She is proud to have worked on "Small Town Stories" alongside Loralee, a wonderful friend and terrific videographer and editor.  Della is a member of Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, APCA (Assn. for the Promotion of Campus Activities).

EXPERIENCE OF VIDEOGRAPHER/EDITOR (Loralee Dierks):

  Currently has a program running on all three Cable Access channels called "Carolina Backroads." She produced programs for 15 years, and  received awards for producing and hosting community events coverage, entertainment series, and individual programs as well as editing. In 1989 she was named “Producer of the Year at the Charlotte Community Television Awards.

SPECIAL NOTE: www.alsa.org - The ALS Association. I am currently working with Tracey Crowe and Cindy Kendall on a video journal and Public Service Announcement about Loralee and her daily struggle.

Loralee Ann Mericle Bruce
 Mrs. Loralee Ann Mericle Bruce, 60 of China Grove, died Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at her home following a year and a half of declining health. Born Aug. 21, 1946, Memorials may be made to ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road Suite #150, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301.

 #1 -Judy Rozzelle will delight us with stories about growing up in Shuffletown, North Carolina on Friday, January 16, 2004.

FRONT PORCH STORIES™© was held on 11/5 & 11/6/04 at A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church (8209 McClure Circle, Charlotte, NC  28216) where folks came to hear a staged reading of some of the essays from "Shuffletown USA."

#2   - Find out how a beautiful small town like Asheville, NC created its first Film Festival on Friday, February 20, 2004

Director's wife, Producer and some of the younger cast of "Angel Doll"  (including Michael Welch who is on the TV show Joan of Arcadia).  This film was shown at Asheville Film Festival.  I also had them enter it into Charlotte's Southern Exposure Film Festival in Nov. 2003.

#3  - (March 19, 2004) - We'll visit Kannapolis in Cabarrus County and meet with a gentleman who not only runs the GI House, the History Section of the Public Library, but also managed to have time to do the research for the Walking Tour of the downtown area.  Then, we'll talk with a seamstress who has sewn for many famous folks, and also with her sister who spoke before congress.  We'll also tell you all about the Gem Movie Theater, continuously running since 1936.  And, we'll look into the future of a town that faced the closing of its largest employer.

#4  - (April 16, 2004) - Another puzzle for you.  What do movies, TV, radio and our curiosity have in common? LIVING THROUGH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA:

#5 - (May 21, 2004 - PART 1 OF 2) - 50 years have passed since the Supreme Court ruled on "Brown vs. Board of Education."  But, did you know that the struggle began here in the Carolinas?  We'll visit the Levine Museum of The New South here in Charlotte and take a tour, with Tom Hanchett, Staff Historian, of two of their exhibits  -  "Courage" and "Cottonfields to Skyscrapers." #6 - (June 18, 2004 - PART 2 OF 2) Then, we will hear from some of the folks who will share their memories of growing up in the south and particularly in Charlotte, NC, and living through those times (Edith Strickland DeLaine, James Ross and Price Davis).

#8 - (August 20, 2004) -

The word family usually means those you are related to. However, sometimes you meet someone and they feel closer to you than your own blood relatives.

In today’s program we will hear stories about both kinds of relationships.

I have talked before about pieces of the puzzle. It is really amazing how life pieces fit together when it comes to the people we know…

1.Rose PostRose Post.jpg (77874 bytes) - Award winning journalist with the Salisbury Post reads her story about a family from Salisbury that became close enough to be family with folks from Indiana during the 1986 drought.

2. Luise (Petey) Palmer - Will tell us her adventures of being a military brat and living all around the world and then settling in Salisbury, NC

3. Doris Allen (Stonie) Wylie - It's again war time and we revisit an episode in her life involving her mother, her beaux and her "other" beaux.  She'll also read the chapter from the book that the "other" beaux wrote about this event.

4. Christa Flood - If you've never been involved in a family reunion, Christa and her family sure have.  They're 300 strong now and come from all over to a town near Rocky Mount, NC

#10 - (October 15, 2004) - 

We all have our wonderful memories of family and friends and where we grew up, on this episode of Small Town Stories, we learn how to write about these memories.  We will learn this from Robin Edgar, author of "In My Mother's Kitchen."  She teaches us about reminiscence writing. #12 - (December 17, 2004) -"It's a Wonderful Life."  Come and celebrate the holidays with us in Charlotte as we discover all of the wonderful traditions during our "Man On The Street" interviews.  You'll get to meet Jaime Bedrin, News Reporter from WFAE as she tells about celebrating Chanukah.  Wayne Powers of Tea Rex shares his childhood memories of Christmas and a funny Los Angeles Christmas story.  And, you will take a ride on the Trolley from South End to 11th Street in Uptown Charlotte, past the new Bobcat Stadium and Imaginon.
